Why Six Bricks?

Simple by Design.

Powerful in Practice.

How can something so simple create so many possibilities?

Six bricks don't look like much. But put them into the hands of a curious child and they can become something to sort, stack, compare, balance, move, imagine, test, change and talk about.

Same six bricks.

New thinking every time.

The Thinking behind the Play

Grounded in how children learn

Young children learn by being active participants in their world — doing, repeating, wondering, talking and connecting.

Six Bricks @ Home creates space for all five.

DO

HANDS FIRST

Children learn by touching, moving, building and testing ideas for themselves.

REPEAT

AGAIN MATTERS

Repeating an experience helps children notice more, try differently and deepen their understanding.

WONDER

QUESTIONS OPEN POSSIBILITIES

Curiosity invites children to investigate, predict and discover rather than simply wait for an answer

TALK

PUT THINKING INTO WORDS

Naming, describing, questioning and explaining help children make sense of what they discover.

CONNECT

LEARN TOGETHER

A responsive adult who watches, listens and wonders alongside a child makes play richer.

Do. Repeat. Wonder. Talk. Connect.

This is what learning can look like before it ever looks like a lesson.

WHY ONLY SIX?

Because more isn’t always more.

Young children are surrounded by choice.

More toys. More pieces. More instructions. More stimulation.

Six Bricks @ Home deliberately does something different.

We make the materials smaller,
so the thinking can become bigger.

The Power of Simple

Six principles. Endless possibilities.

1. SIMPLE

A small number of familiar materials makes it easy to start.

2. REPEATABLE

The bricks stay the same. The thinking changes

3. HANDS ON

Children learn by touching, moving, building and manipulating.

4. LANGUAGE RICH

The bricks give children and adults something concrete to talk about.

5. OPEN ENDED

There doesn’t need to be one correct answer.

6. INQUIRY DRIVEN

Instead of asking “Can you do it?” we begin asking, “What do you think?”

GROUNDED IN EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT

Made for little learners. Grounded in how they grow.

Six Bricks @ Home supports playful experiences that connect naturally with South Africa’s early childhood development framework.

Six Bricks @ Home is a play and caregiver-support programme. It is not a replacement for an ECD centre, formal curriculum or developmental assessment.

WELL-BEING

Feeling safe, capable and confident.

IDENTITY AND BELONGING

Developing a sense of self and connection.

COMMUNICATION

Listening, talking, describing and expressing ideas.

EXPLORING MATHEMATICS

Noticing number, pattern, shape, size and sequence.

CREATIVITY

Imagining, experimenting and expressing ideas.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD

Exploring, questioning and making sense of how things work.

JUST 10-15 MINUTES PER DAY

SMALL MOMENTS ARE ENOUGH

No lengthy lessons. No complicated preparation. Just 10–15 playful minutes to open the bag, explore an idea and wonder together.

10–15 minutes. Six bricks. So much growing underneath.
